The Importance of Stakeholder Management for Lead Product Designers

July 23, 2023 • 2 min read

Being a Lead Product Designer in a large organisation it's vitally important to ensure the right stakeholders are included in the right way at the right time. Here I'll share some of my thoughts on how you can improve your stakeholder management and communication skills to enhance your power of influence.

Who are your stakeholders?

Stakeholders are essentially anyone who cares about what you're creating. They can be executives, managers, marketers, developers, and of course the end-users. Each of them has their own agenda and opinions, making your job as a designer more challenging. Managing stakeholders is crucial for the success of your product or feature and even your career. One of the first things you should do is establish who your stakeholders are and you can do this by creating a Stakeholder map.

Communication is key

  1. Syncing Goals: Great stakeholder management means getting everyone on the same page. Engaging stakeholders early on lets you tap into their insights, spot potential roadblocks, and build a shared vision for your product. When everyone's aligned, conflicts decrease, and collaboration soars.
  2. Grabbing Resources: Stakeholder support is like a golden ticket to resources. By building strong relationships and proving your worth, you can convince stakeholders to invest in your project. This means securing the budget, manpower, and technology you need to create an awesome product that wows the world.
  3. Unleashing Innovation: Stakeholders are walking treasure troves of knowledge and experience. By keeping those communication channels open, you can learn from their wisdom and gain fresh perspectives. This collaborative approach sparks innovation, leading to mind-blowing designs that hit the sweet spot between user needs and business goals.
  4. Taming Expectations: Stakeholders, especially the higher-ups, hold the power to evaluate your project's success. Keeping them in the loop with transparent and regular communication helps manage their expectations. When stakeholders know what's up, they'll have realistic hopes, offer constructive feedback, and keep your design process in check.

The power of influence

  1. Building Bridges: Strong relationships with stakeholders are the magic glue that holds it all together. Interact regularly, have meetings, informal chats, and workshops. Show empathy, listen actively to their concerns, and value their opinions. Building trust and credibility is like greasing the wheels of influence.
  2. Communication That Packs a Punch: Influencing stakeholders means talking the talk. You gotta explain your ideas, present your designs, and justify your decisions in a way that clicks with their priorities. Fancy visuals, storytelling, and data-backed insights can turn complicated stuff into a breeze to understand and sell.
  3. Selling the Value: Stakeholders are all about what's in it for them. Align your proposals with their interests and goals. Show them how your designs bring value to the organization—more moolah, happier customers, or a killer edge over competitors. When they see the connection to the bigger picture, getting their buy-in becomes a piece of cake.
  4. Flexibility and Negotiation: Let's face it, not everyone's gonna love your ideas. As a savvy product designer, be open to feedback, take constructive criticism in your stride, and be willing to compromise. Finding middle ground that satisfies multiple stakeholders is the secret sauce to winning their hearts.

Conclusion

By mastering these skills, you'll be able to balance the act of keeping your stakeholders happy and driving your designs forward. It can be incredibly challenging at first and will take some courage, but building those relationships and ensuring good communication will lead to better influence on your stakeholders.
